The Myanmar Kyaukphyu gas-fired power station project is located in the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone of Rakhine State in western Myanmar. The installed capacity of the project is 135 MW. After completion, the annual on-grid electricity will be about 1 billion kWh. The problem of regional energy shortage has laid a solid power supply foundation for the development of the Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone.

Sheng Yuming, chairman of POWERCHINA Overseas Investment Co., Ltd., said that Myanmar is an important fulcrum of the "Belt and Road" initiative, and it is also a key market that POWERCHINA has cultivated for many years. The Kyaukphyu project is an important infrastructure project that is related to local people's livelihood and affects industrial development, and has played a significant benchmarking effect. POWERCHINA will give full play to the advantages of the "investment, construction and operation" integrated whole industry chain, invest, construct and operate the Kyaukpyu project well, making it a demonstration project for cooperation between China and Myanmar in the field of electricity.

As the country with the largest power industry in the world, China actively assists Myanmar to solve the problem of power shortage. It is understood that Chinese companies have undertaken a series of power projects in Myanmar, and are currently promoting projects such as the Taiping River first-class power station to supply power to Myanmar and China-Myanmar cross-border power interconnection. More than 90% of the equipment used in the Kyaukphyu gas-fired power station that was ignited and put into operation today is made in China. The company overcame the epidemic and other difficulties and completed the progress ahead of schedule, creating a "speed of power construction", which is another successful example of China-Myanmar power cooperation. It will provide better guarantee for the economic and social development of Rakhine State.
